Profs & Pints

Their Story

Profs and Pints brings college faculty members into bars, cafés, and other off-campus venues to give fascinating talks and instructive workshops. It is based in Washington D.C. and has expanded to Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, and Philadelphia, with plans to grow to other cities. Started by reporter Peter Schmidt, Profs and Pints offers continued learning and knowledge without the cost of tuition. The subjects discussed range from: history and business, to politics and the environment. New ideas and innovations are often brought to the table as well. Peter’s goal in establishing this organization was to provide the general public with easy access to knowledge from instructors, inspired by the informal, democratic model of education found in ancient Greece.

My Solution

I wanted to create a brand for Profs and Pints that not only reflected its academic roots, but the cheeky and fun side as well. Playing off college seals and logos, I created two logomarks using custom beer and book icons to showcase the ‘profs’ and ‘pints’ portions of the company. The color palette and fonts also reflected the academic nature of the company while giving the brand a modern feel. Once the branding was completed, I also created some social post templates for event schedules and information. Moving forward, we’re hoping to utilize the logo on merch for the company, on items such as: beer glasses, enamel pins, tote bags, and more.

Testimonial

I approached Colleen with a tall order. I asked her to come up with a logo and branding guide for an entirely new type of company, which brings college professors into bars, cafes, hotels, and other venues to give talks or conduct workshops. The logo had to evoke, simultaneously, professors and pints, scholarly expertise and access to the broad public, academe and  casual bar settings, thinking as well as drinking. Above all, it had to be fun and look great on a beer stein, coffee mug, or t-shirt. She hit the nail on the head with both the logo and associated branding, and she took pains before, during, and after the creative process to ensure I was happy with her work.
